God the Father with Musician Angels
ca. 1510-20
wood
34 x 61 cm
Inv. 56.838
The work of unknown provenance was carved from a single piece of wood. It must have been made for the central wooden case of a winged altarpiece. The figures of God the Father and the singing and music making angels are arranged on a half circle and are seen from below. Almost all of them look downward, which suggests that they once crowned a scene of the Nativity of Christ. The divine blessing is meant thus for the only begotten Son. The relief is close to the late style of the school of the mining towns in Upper Hungary and dates already from the second decade of the 16th century.
