Mary Magdalene receiving communion from Bishop Maximus; panel painted on one side
1480-1500
Wood, tempera, gilt
82 x 54.5 x .8 cm
Inv. 55.60.1

According to legend, before her death, angels brought Mary Magdalene to Bishop Maximus in Aix-en-Provence so that he could administer last communion to her. This scene appears on this panel, which may have comprised the stationary wing of a winged altarpiece or served as part of an epitaph. The reverse is coated in primer, but no traces of a depiction can be seen.

Provenance:
Ipolyi collection. ‘76. A female saint taking communion. Painting on a panel, detail from an altarpiece wing. 15th c.’ (Lakatos-Balla 290)

Restoration:
1970. Péter Menráth removed overpainting done during an earlier restoration (about which we have no information) and burn marks from a candle. Paint loss was filled in using hatching.
