Crucifixion with St. Francis and St. Bernardino of Siena
1460-70
Wood, tempera
108 x 97 cm
Inv. 55.445.1
The nearly square panel painting empathically displaying two Franciscan saints was thus presumably made for a donor associated with the Franciscans. The frame is new, but as the edges of the painting are intact on every side, we can conclude that it was not trimmed.
An inscription appears in front of the donor, beneath the cross: ‘bitt got viir h bernt v der elberch’. The painting was transferred to a new support.
Provenance:
Ipolyi Collection. ’93. Epitaph: beneath the cross are Mary and John and two monk-saints; a figure kneels at their feet; inscription: Bitt Gott vur h.Bernt v.der elberch. Panel, 15th c.’
Bibliography
Genthon-1948, 121. – Boskovits-Mojzer-Mucsi-1964, 164. – Mucsi-1975, 24. – Cséfalvay-1993, 196. (Végh János)
