Birth of Jesus. Presumably a detail from the movable wing of a winged altarpiece decorated with reliefs
c. 1480
Wood, polychrome, traces of gilding
65 x 45 cm
Former inner side of an altarpiece wing
Inv. 56.837
The relief decorated the feast-day side of a winged altarpiece. The painting and gilding that survive in traces on the surface are perhaps, in part, the remains of a later Baroque-period modification that was removed.
Back of the relief: The traces of polychrome on the object may in part be the remains of a later (Baroque?) repainting that was removed.
Provenance:
Ipolyi Collection, most likely: ‘158. Birth of Jesus. Low relief from the early 16th century. Framed, on a new support. Its colours abraded.’ (Lakatos-Balla 290)
Sculptor from Pozsony (?) influenced by Southern German sculpture
