Three women at the tomb of Christ; fragment of a movable wing of a winged altarpiece
c. 1480-90
Wood, tempera
126 x 56 cm
Inv. 56.566
The Augsburg master, who freely used elements from Netherlandish painting, is especially known for his depictions of the Passion of Christ. The partially trimmed panel, which shows the three women at the grave of Christ in the foreground and a Noli me Tangere scene in the background, presumably adorned the movable wing of a Calvary altarpiece. According to the literature, its companion, depicting Christ being stripped of his garments, can be found in the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart.
Provenance:
János Simor purchased it from Dengler, the vicar of Regensburg, in 1876.
