St. John the Evangelist from a statue group depicting the Lamentation or Entombment of Christ
1480-90
Wood, restored polychromy, gilt
79 x 22 x 33 cm
Inv. 56.840.1

The apostle, on one knee, holds his left hand to his head; his right hand is missing: originally he held his arm in front of him, slightly downwards (perhaps gesturing towards the deceased Christ, lying in front of him). The kneeling position and the hand gesture expressing grief suggest the figure belonged to a statue group depicting the Lamentation or Entombment of Christ.

Provenance:
Probably from the Ipolyi collection, but it cannot be identified with any certainty in the inventory. Perhaps: ‘4 wooden statues from the 15th-16th c.: Mary (163), two John the apostle and an elderly bearded male saint (182)’
