The panel, earlier known as the Heinperger epitaph, depicts the Death of Mary, with the engraving of the same theme (B 33) by Martin Schongauer as its prototype. It was placed, along with its old frame, in a new frame.

Provenance:
It was acquired by Karl Lemann from the collection of Blasius Höfel in Wiener Neustadt, and then acquired by Arnold Ipolyi. ‘99. Mortuarium: Death of Mary, painted as a dynamic scene. Mary lies in a bed with red curtains. A family can be seen kneeling at the foot of the bed: on one side a man and the other a mother and her seven children. The inscription below reads: Am freytag Sand Mathias abendt ist gestorben. Die ersam Fraw……hiroltin des wolgelerten Steffan Heinperger lerer in den Siben frewen…….Burger zu der…stat sliche hausfrau geweseh ist. Panel, in a contemporary frame.’ (Lakatos-Balla 291).

Dezső Varga, 1956, (who removed the earlier overpainting, retouched the works and conserved the original frame)
