Half figure of Christ Blessing; detail from a diptych (?)
c. 1480
Wood, tempera, gilt
21 x 15 x .3 cm
Inv. 55.348.1
This depiction blends elements from Blessing Christ and Man of Sorrows depictions. The panel was originally painted on both sides, then sawed in two—or perhaps its support was thinned. The upper part was rounded into an arch, and later this missing section was replaced. The bottom and sides bear traces of the original edges, and here the dimensions of the panel are that of the original.
Provenance:
Ipolyi collection, ‘231. Bust of Christ on a gold ground. Panel. Written in blue pencil on the back: Martin Schaffner von Ulm.’ (Lakatos-Balla 284) (Lakatos-Balla 58). According to Boskovits-Mojzer-Mucsi 1964 the panel is from the Simor collection (II. Maszlaghy 1891, 264); this identification, however, is wrong.
