Hungarian sculptor (?)

Standing figure of an apostle
1500-1510
Wood, painted, gilt
87 x 30 x 22 cm
Inv. 56.909.1

The standing figure of an apostle is holding a closed book in his right hand. Clearly, in his left hand he must have held an attribute that would have made it possible to identify him. The back of the statue is also carved and bears traces of a ten-cm wide strip where the statue was joined to a support.

Provenance:
Unknown. Some have posited that Antal Lepold purchased it from Endler. Other sources believe it was from the Ipolyi collection. (None of the entries in the Ipolyi inventory unequivocally match this statue.)

Restoration:
No information. However, tratteggio retouching obviously done in the 20th century is clearly visible on the back.
