Mary in Prayer and St. John the Baptist; details from panel paintings, framed together
1510-20
Pine, tempera
123.5 x 59.5 x .4 cm
Inv. 56.458
This composition is composed of two panel painting details that were joined later. One detail shows Mary with clasped hands kneeling on a cloud, while the other shows St. John the Baptist also kneeling, with his arms open in prayer. The two figures may have originally belonged to a Deesis depiction. Mary and St. John the Baptist were perhaps cut out of the composition and placed together in a 19th-century frame in order to be sold on the art market.
