11. Medieval works from Hungary and the German and Austrian territories

Southern German (Swabian?) workshop

Death of Mary; detail of a movable wing decorated with relief work
c. 1520
Linden, with modern-period polychromy
85.8 x 32.5 x 7 cm (without frame); 96.8 x 44 x 7 cm (with new frame)
Inv. 56.856

Relief depiction showing Mary’s final prayer with the background carved from the same wood. The upper corners were cut off and the work was slightly trimmed. Its reverse was probably thinned. The arrangement of the composition suggests the work may have adorned the inner side of the right wing of an altarpiece. Most of the polychromy is a 20th century addition. Its frame was made in the 19th century.

Provenance:
Ipolyi collection 179 (‘Wood relief (from an altarpiece wing), death of Mary. Early 16th c. (if original). Polychromy is new.’) (Lakatos-Balla 293)

Restoration:
1968 (?) perhaps Mrs. Tibor Eisenmeier, 1971; Ferenc Berecz (disinfection and protective coating with Xylamon); Gergely Kolozsvári, 2016 (microscopic examinations).
