Archbishop János Scitovszky invited all the leading personages of Hungary, including the uncrowned king Franz Joseph, for the consecration of the Cathedral of Esztergom (31 August, 1851). At the ceremonial dinner, all guests had three glasses (for aperitif, wine, and water) inscribed with a commemorative inscription and the image of the Cathedral. They were allowed to keep them. Crimson glaze, which allows the inscription and the image shine through with the natural colour of the glass, was the most preferred type of glass decoration in this period. A great number of similar objects were produced in the glass-works of Northern Hungary.
