“Saint Stephen and His Works” – The Millennial Tapestry
1998-2000
wool, cotton, silk
3.5 x 5.5 m
Inv. 2001.1.

This woven tapestry was executed by 33 members of the Hungarian Association of Tapestry-Weaving Artists in honour of the 1000th anniversary of the coronation of the first Hungarian king Saint Stephen. The participating artists carried out jointly the work of preparation, design and execution in the traditional technique that flourished between the 15th and 17th centuries in Northern France and Flanders. Hungary’s past is invoked through citations from visual and verbal sources. The rich composition includes motifs from the Holy Crown of Hungary, the 11th-century coronation robe, the miniatures of the 14th-century Illuminated Chronicle and medieval frescos. The Hungarian texts are citations from Saint Stephen’s admonitions written to his son.
