The panel showing St. Paul may have belonged to the lower register of the right wing of a former retable. In its original arrangement, the upper and lower paintings of the narrow wings were separated from each other merely by a painted frame (whose traces can be seen on both sides, along the upper edge). The wings were obviously later sawed in two horizontally.
The style of the images links them to mid-15th century painting in Salzburg or Vienna.
