St. Benedict; detail from the movable wing of a winged altarpiece
c. 1480
Pine, tempera
81 x 43 cm
Inv. 55.46.1
This painting decorated the feast-day side of an originally two-sided panel from a winged altarpiece. The pointed top of the painting may be the result of a later modification. The back was cradled and traces of paint can be seen in the corners. According to the earlier literature, the painter belonged to the circle of the Master of the St. Nicholas Altarpiece of Jánosrét; therefore, the panel was most likely painted in a workshop in Körmöcbánya.
Provenance:
János Simor arranged for the transfer of the panel from the abbey church of Garamszentbenedek to Esztergom.
Restoration:
Traces of at least two restoration procedures carried out at unknown times can be seen on the panel, but we have no information about either. Cross-hatching additions were made across a large surface of the panel.
