Altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin Mary, from Felka
c. 1480
Wood, tempera, gilt

Madonna; statue from the shrine of the altarpiece of the Virgin Mary, from Felka
Inv. 55.47.1.1

138 cm

The Madonna statue stands in the middle niche of the shrine. The Child, who was positioned on her left arm, is missing. Her left foot is placed on a crescent moon facing upwards.
She is encircled by sunrays applied to the back and sides of the shrine. The V-shaped neckline of her relatively intact gold dress, her belt and the edges of her cloak are adorned with a nearly complete set of appliqued pearls. The cloak was once held together by a strap; today only the clasps have survived on each side of the cloak.

Provenance:
It was acquired from the village of Felka by the Hungarian National Museum after 1913; later in the 1920s it was procured through exchange by the Christian Museum.

Restoration:
Lajos Nikássy, 1933; Szilvia Hernády and Mária Laurentzy, 1986
