Workshop of the so-called master of Szmrecsány

Four panels from the former altarpiece of the Virgin Mary in Malompatak
c. 1480
Pine, tempera
Inv. 55.48.1

St. Lawrence. Detail from the movable wing of the former altarpiece of the Virgin Mary in Malompatak

75 x 48 cm

The panel showing the Adoration of the Magi on the inner side and St. Lawrence holding his attribute, a grill, on the outer, was assembled in a triptych with two narrow panels depicting female saints at the time it was inventoried; this explains why the works have the same inventory number.
The condition and quality of the depiction on the outer side indicates that, like many other altars connected to the workshop, the Malompatak altarpiece, most certainly dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was either remodelled or repaired in the Baroque era. In this case, however, probably only an inexpert repair of the original Gothic depiction was considered necessary.

Provenance:
Roman Catholic Church of Malompatak. In 1938 the Christian Museum purchased it from the Budapest art dealer Ödön Balla.

Restoration:
Szilvia Hernády and Mária Laurentzy, 1986
