Painter from a mining town

Two panels from the movable wing of a winged altarpiece from Garamszentbenedek
1510-20
Pine, tempera, gilt

The Annunciation; on the reverse: Christ on the Mount of Olives
Inv. 55.89

97 x 51 cm

Panel 55.89, showing the Annunciation with Christ on the Mount of Olives on the reverse, is the companion to panel 55.90, showing the Visitation with the Flagellation on the reverse. The two panels adorned the same winged altarpiece, whose original place of usage was presumably the Benedictine abbey church of Garamszentbenedek. The compositions on the former feast-day side are based on Dürer’s engravings B 19 and B84. The workday side was overpainted to a significant degree in the 18th century; during restoration the overpainting was partially removed.

Provenance:
János Simor bought the paintings from the abbey church of Garamszentbenedek.
