Figure of Mary from an Annunciation or Visitation group

The figure’s posture and composition suggest it most likely belonged to an Annunciation or Visitation group. It was carved in the round, and the lower back of the statue bears traces of the now missing joint. Originally the work did not belong to a winged altarpiece but must have been part of a sculpture group that was viewed in the round.
Provenance:
Ipolyi Collection; according to Kornél Divald, the statue came from the area of Besztercebánya. It cannot be identified with any certainty in the inventories: ‘4 wooden sculptures from the 15th and 16th centuries: Mary (163), two John the apostles and an older, bearded, male saint (182).’ (Lakatos-Balla)
