Birth of Jesus; presumably a detail from the movable wing of winged altarpiece
1490-1500
Wood, tempera, gilt
40.5 x 61 x .5 cm
Inv. 55.450.1

The panel, probably sawed in two, may have belonged to the movable wing, decorated on both sides, of a winged altarpiece. Its background was gilt, although, large patches of both the background and the main image were overpainted. On the back, the cross braces (perhaps 19th-century) may date to the period when the panel was sawed in two.

Provenance:
Probably from the Ipolyi collection. ‘167. Birth of Jesus. On a gold ground, painted on panel. 16th c. (If original!) Split.’ (Lakatos-Balla 275)

Restoration:
We have no information about restoration. It probably has not been touched since arriving to the museum.
