11. Medieval works from Hungary and the German and Austrian territories

Southern German or Austrian painter

Birth of Jesus; presumably a detail from the stationary wing of a winged altarpiece
Early 16th century
Wood, tempera
77 x 58.5 cm
Inv. 56.455.1

The panel at one time belonged to the stationary wing of a winged altarpiece, as suggested by the thinning of the edges of the reverse, which was done so that the panel would fit in the original frame. The two cracks visible on the reverse were repaired with canvas, perhaps before the Christian Museum acquired the work. (The inventory number of the Primate’s Gallery was affixed to this canvas.)

Provenance:
The Christian Museum acquired the work from the collection of a doctor named Woland from Esztergom. On the back, the inventory number (130) of the Prince Primate’s Gallery can be seen.
