The Holy Family Resting
After 1530
Wood, tempera
86 x 58.5 cm
Inv. 56.453
The figure of Mary seated under and apple tree nursing the Child in her lap was a relatively frequent element in the oeuvre of Cranach. The composition with Joseph and the animals, however, appears in a nearly identical form only in one workshop painting made around 1530. (See: http://lucascranach.org/PRIVATE_NONE-P118) This is perhaps identical to the picture auctioned at Christie’s on 5 December 1969, which corresponds in every detail with respect to composition and is of very similar size (87 x 59 cm) to the Esztergom panel (this information provided by János Végh).
