The three panels depicting scenes of martyrdom (55.50.1; 55.50.2; 55.50.3), originally painted on both sides, certainly belonged to the same winged altarpiece and had earlier been enclosed in one frame. Their reverses were sawed off, and the feast-day side depictions were placed on new supports. The literature has associated them with the altarpiece wings from Nagytótlak, although Alfred Stange did not mention these paintings, now in Esztergom, when he surveyed the master’s oeuvre.
Provenance:
János Simor purchased them at an auction held in the Viennese Kunsthalle prior to 1878.
Restoration:
Sebestyén Endrődi, 1915; Dezső Varga (?), after 1964 (at this time the panels, which had been described in earlier literature as being enclosed in one frame, were reframed separately).
