Two panels from the movable wings of a winged altarpiece
1480-90
pine, tempera, gilt
Burning at the stake of the scholars converted by St. Catherine of Alexandria; on the reverse: the archangel Gabriel from the Annunciation. Detail from the right wing of a winged altarpiece
Inv. 55.84
66 x 53.5 cm; 62 x 49.5 cm (painted surface)
The panel was the companion to the painting showing St. Catherine of Alexandria’s dispute with the scholars (55.83). This is corroborated by the presence on the reverse of each panel of elements that together form an Annunciation depiction.
Provenance:
Ipolyi Collection. ‘120. Female saint before those intending to burn her. (St. Catherine). Companion to no. 125 in chest no. 9. On the reverse a wispily painted angel. 15th-16th c.’ (Lakatos-Balla 280). Some reports indicate the panels were acquired in the border region of Sáros and Szepes counties (?)
