c. 1480
Pine, tempera
St. Catherine of Alexandria. Painted side panel of a shrine from the former altarpiece of the Virgin Mary in Malompatak
Inv. 55.48.2
75 x 23 cm
The narrow panel paintings portraying St. Barbara and St. Catherine of Alexandria were assembled in a triptych with the Adoration of the Magi at the time they were inventoried. This explains why the works have the same inventory number. The paintings of the female saints were almost certainly the two painted side panels of the shrine belonging to the altarpiece of the Virgin Mary.
Provenance:
Roman Catholic Church of Malompatak. In 1938 the Christian Museum purchased it from the Budapest art dealer Ödön Balla.
Restoration:
Szilvia Hernády and Mária Laurentzy, 1986
