Detail from the movable wing of a winged altarpiece
c. 1480
Pine, tempera, gilt
St. Nicholas and the three daughters of the poor nobleman
Inv. 55.86
82 x 51.5 cm; 81 x 48 cm (painted surface)
The panel, originally painted on both sides but sawed apart, showed an episode from the Legend of St. Nicholas on one side and Christ on the Mount of Olives (55.87) on the other. It appeared on the same movable wing as the panel depicting another episode from the legend of St. Nicholas (55.85) and the scene of Christ Carrying the Cross (55.88)
Provenance:
The museum purchased the panel on the art market at an unknown time.
Restoration:
Dezső Varga, 1956: earlier overpainting was removed. Retouched areas using hatching (tratteggio) are visible on the panels, indicating an earlier restoration procedure.
