Four panel paintings from a winged altarpiece
c. 1470
Pine, tempera
Detail of the apostles’ farewell. Detail of a movable wing of a winged altarpiece
Inv. 55.36
75 x 60 cm
The professional literature has treated the panels depicting three apostles (55.34, 55.35) and the apostles’ farewell (55.36) and the panel showing female saints (55.37) as elements from the same altarpiece, although, despite the many similarities, significant incongruities can also be observed. The differences in the surviving background patterns, the details of the spaces, the facial types and the body proportions suggest several hands were involved. The dimensions, however, are conspicuously identical.
Provenance:
Ipolyi Collection. (According to tradition, Ipolyi acquired the panels from the castle of the Kapeller family.
