11. Medieval works from Hungary and the German and Austrian territories

Workshop of the so-called master of Szmrecsány

Four panels from the former altarpiece of the Virgin Mary in Malompatak
c. 1480
Pine, tempera

Birth of Jesus. Detail from the movable wing of the former altarpiece of the Virgin Mary in Malompatak
Inv. 55.49

74 x 43 cm

The inner, feast-day side of the panel showed the Birth of Jesus, while the outer, workday side presented the Vir Dolorum.
The condition and quality of the depiction on the outer side indicates that, like many other altars connected to the workshop, the Malompatak altarpiece, most certainly dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was either remodelled or repaired in the Baroque era. In this case, however, probably only an inexpert repair of the original Gothic depiction was considered necessary.

Provenance: Roman Catholic Church of Malompatak. In 1938 the Christian Museum purchased it from the Budapest art dealer Ödön Balla.

Restoration:
Ildikó Kákai-Szabó 1969
