c. 1460
Wood, tempera, gilt
St. Matthias the apostle
Inv. 56.500
37 x 31 cm
Panels comprising the painted side panels of the shrine of a winged altarpiece. The wood panel support was later thinned. On the upper part the etched contours of the former carved, traceried appliqué decoration can be seen. Originally this work appeared with three other panels (56.497, 56.498 and 56.499) also showing apostles on the feast-day side of the same winged altarpiece.
Provenance:
Acquired by Karl Lemann from Blasius Höfel in 1839 and then purchased by Arnold Ipolyi. ‘121 and 123. Two small altarpiece paintings, on wood boards; St. Bartholomew and St. Judas (with saw?) On gold ground. 15th and 16th c.’ (Lakatos-Balla 279)
Restoration:
Judit Novák, 1987
